An Interesting Day

I had made plans with my friends for yesterday but all of them were busy, so when I received this news, I was sure my weekend was going to be very boring. However, my buddy from high school, Afsar came over to try out the new Logitech Driving Force GT steering wheel I had bought last week. We had fun playing Gran Turismo 5, often crashing into each other and what-not.

Afsar’s a busy guy, coz he works for his dad full-time and all. So it was awesome hanging out with him yesterday. After we had our share of PS3, he got a call requesting him to run some errands. I was free, so I decided to tag along. However after a sudden change of plans, both of us landed up at his place, we basically chilled out and played some Xbox360.

As you may now, its Ramadan month nowadays, and Afsar’s family likes to help out in the local community so I tagged along to help him out. Basically we were like the “delivery” guys, we brought food from one big central mosque to the smaller mosques all around the area. It was nice helping out. I also went inside the mosque to have a look. Quite an experience I must say, as I’ve never been inside one. It was tiled with marble, with many devotees sitting on carpet praying towards Mecca. I’ve seen stuff like this on TV, but yesterday, saw it first-hand.

After that we headed back to Afsar’s place and his family broke their fast with dates and water. I hadn’t eaten much all day either, so it kinda felt like I was fasting too. Haha! Anyway, his family are very welcoming, open-minded and nice. I had a great time eating delicious food and talking to Afsar’s extended family.

Overall a great saturday.  🙂

Whats going on in Europe?

As you may have heard, England has been ravaged by a 4 day mayhem of looting, rioting, vandalism that took place all across its major cities. I’ve been reading analysis and reports on the cause of these riots, and like the analysts, its hard for me to determine the true cause of this disaster.

Based on what I’ve read, it seems like suppressed racial tensions and a general sense of dissatisfaction among Britons with everything going on in UK seems to be the root cause.  The shooting of Mark Duggan was just a spark, which later fuelled a fire that engulfed major cities.

Income disparities, lack of job opportunities, biased police behavior towards minorities seemed to have been a perfect concoction for a riot. But who is to be blamed? From the rich to the poor, everyone was somehow involved in this riot, whether they be looting, vandalising, whatever.

Whatever the reason, the riots do serve as a wake up call for Britons and Europeans in general, as their once flourishing economies, attracting much migration and what-not are now crumbling under enormous debts, inflation and the ever constant relief of bailouts.

Speaking of economies, the European economies are melting down, with banks having loaned out so much money to people with no viable assets, and the fact that all the countries are finding it hard to run their economies with the Euro (ironic since this was introduced to make things easier). Each nation has its own culture and thoughts about money, so putting it crudely, the rich and innovative Germans don’t wanna bailout the lazy Greeks. Also, many German banks have loaned out money to developing economies in Europe (which seem to be crumbling, leaving these banks to have lost billions of Euros in irrecoverable funds).

I’m not an economics expert, but its simple, taking loans that you will not be able to pay back is just stupid, whether it be on a personal level, or it be on country-economy level.

What do you guys think about the meltdown in Europe? Leave a comment!

The Long Awaited Update

HERE WE GO.

I’m not going to rant about how in a long time I haven’t updated this remote page on the World Wide Web. Anyway, just an quick follow-ip.

Going on to 3rd year Electrical Engineering. Wow, time does fly by past. Its been a hellish year to be honest, with insane amounts of work, long hours, and practically no weekends. Nonetheless, many friendships were forged, and I did have some moments I do treasure.

Thanks to my sociable skills and involvement in school, I’ve made quite a few friends in engineering, which allows me access to parties and birthdays and whathaveyous. These were probably the best times I’ve had, and I look forward to meeting everyone again in September when University resumes. Additionally, attending parties and social events have allowed me to adopt the local culture, thus feeling less out-of-it-all whenever I’m at these gatherings.

My summer trip has been awesome so far, went to India for my cousins’s wedding, and it was alot of fun. Helping out via running errands, offering support, carrying out rituals, all  helped to make it a surreal experience. I’ve been to many weddings, but this one was definitely the best. Nothing beats being immediate family of the groom/bride.

After the wedding I got busy with meeting up with cousins and all, had a few sick times on his bike. We used to go to this isolated place to drink, it was serene and peaceful. Beer made us laugh at stupid things, and also pour out our hearts. Riding back home tipsy was a kickass experience.

Singapore was the next stop on my itinerary, and it was good to be back on the island where I grew up. Many memories associated with Yishun and Singapore in general. Hung out with my buddies from YTSS and YJC, it was nice seeing everyone again, I had a lot of fun; whether it be gaming nights at SY’s, dinner and drinks with friends, or catching a late night movie. All memories to be cherished for a lifetime. My parents are settled there so I’ll be coming to Singapore whenever possible.

Nothing much has happened since my return to Toronto, just been hanging out with my high school buddies and clearing stuff related to school.  Approximately a month before school resumes, but fun times to look forward to, my timetable is manageable and I’m doing the courses I like. Also, orientation week is coming up, it’ll be great to be out in the sun, cheering with the 1st year engineers!

Hopefully this post gives you an update on what has happened so far. There are many details I’ve skipped, but those are for later entries (to keep you coming back and to motivate me to blog :p).

Cheers 🙂

another random rant

well its exam period now, and i have calculus/mat197 tmr, which is gonna be utter rape in the ass. thanks to some people, the course midterms average was 57, and now the exam isnt going to be any easier, a bell curve is expected, however, i feel its not gonna save people -.-

anyway, what a ride 1st year has been, from the nightmares of programming last semester, to the free circuits lab marks this semester, its been one hell of a journey. many friends were made along the way, and many lost too.

i remember around this time last year, i was finishing up gr 12, and was wondering how i’d be feeling one year from then, and walah, that time has arrived. 2009 whizzed by! we’re halfway through 2010 already…

first year has been alright, engineering is intense but i guess i am accustomed to the workload/school pace now, alright…enough ranting abt school, for now

summer is almost here, with longer days and shorter nights, along with double digit temperatures that bring a relief from the winter that plagues toronto for 4 months.

dad’s coming over in may for two weeks, and im planning to get a ps3 and a mountain bike while he’s here hehe:P

summer research opportunities are abundant at campus but sighs, im too lazy to type up a goddamn resume for it and apply, profs never take first years anyway, rather sleep at home 😛

there’s a co-op opening at blackberry that interested me, so i’ll prolly apply for that. i kinda fit the reqs they need. we’ll see

i also have to give my driving test! i delayed it too much last year and this year mom’s not tolerating any excuses. i might volunteer for the DEEP programme thing i went for last summer, where high school peeps enroll at campus for science/engineering mini courses, its pretty interesting, i’ll volunteer to help out, free knowledge and more friends! haha

right now i’m just waiting for exams to end man! well it’ll be over soon.

thanks for reading this post

keep patronizing!, my next post (hopefully, if i get the moment) will be after exams, and i’m sure you can tell by my tone i’ll be happy as a lark

till then,

peace

2nd Semester

Hey everyone, i forgot this blog existed, but anyway let me just update it 🙂

1st semester of University is over! it flew by so fast, man. programming got the better of me last semester, but thankfully i passed it..THANK GOD..i cannot do those hellish labs again where i had to stay in school and finish em up till like 10-11pm..i came home at 1am one day coz of one of my labs..it was insane..but thats over, and it is the least of my worries till 2nd year.

the rest of the subjects were alright, civil engineering mechanics seemed useless to an electrical engineer like me but w/e we had to do it and somehow I crammed..speaking of which, i haven’t crammed so much in my entire school life, i like to plan out my study schedule, but U of T engineering just doesnt let u follow it..ugh…not all was bad though, i made many new friends and we had a awesome blast after midterms and final exams..good times.

India trip was awesome too! got to catch up with cousins after sucha long time, and it was worthwhile..although 2 weeks seemed hell short, i had a good time, going out and simply spending time with my cousins.also, mom went on to go to singapore so i’ve been living alone for abt 3 weeks now…1st week was the worst, i was sick and it was just…plain bad. thankfully i got better by 2nd week and could concentrate on school stuff..

Sad to say though, my crazy workload has given me second thoughts about joining a club or sport, sighs i need to get some exercise man!

neway, back to thermodynamics now, which is kinda interesting hahaha

the chem prof is hawt too 😛

haha cheers!

(promise myself to update this whenever i can) 😛 😛

soccer after a year

this is an informal post, so imma keep it short and sweet… the weather has improved, it has climbed up from the double digit negatives to the double digits positive, yesterday was awesome at 16 degrees, i went out in shorts haha. played soccer yesterday, after almost a year, kinda lost touch, but will play regularly now, at the school indoor court…

holy shit everything here is so damn open! especially in my school, like, people are doing weed and smoke and stuff in the toilets!  additionally, there are so many gangs and stuff in our school, there’s a fight almost every week, and its usually the same people… our school is only famous for their gifted programme, quite ironic though since its the only one to offer gifted programmes and still we have like so many police cases and stuff.. not surprisingly, there is a police patrol car outside our school during school hours and officers are patrolling the building throughoutt the day..

yesterday after soccer i saw a hooker soliciting at the cross junction just outside our school! like wtf! she was walking on the divider, and like waiting for a customer, its kinda shocking for me as i never been to geylang haha. but the weed and smoking and drinking thing is kinda very open and accepted, coz its illegal to sell weed , but not illegal to use it for personal use.. weird. and to challenge authority, people smoke right outside school… there have been stabbings and stuff too, so if u mix with the wrong company you can get urself killed. (you might think im exxagerating but this IS TRUE)

other than that my courses are going fine, have applied to universities and am awaiting an offer in april or may..

thats abt it i guess 😉

cheers!

gimme some coke, on the rocks

gosh, its been ages since i last updated this blog.

no recent developments in my life though, school’s going fine, i received an Honour Roll certificate for my good performance in grade 11 (Feb 2008 to June 2008)..my marks for my subjects have been up, thankfully. Mid term report card is coming, no worries for that though, marks are good 😀

the weather is getting pretty darn unpredictable nowdays…in the morning it seems cold and stuff but it  i feel it actually isnt that cold when i step out of my house to go to school, and on my way back in the late afternoon’s its pretty sunny and hot, so my multi layers of clothing just ignite a fire inside me, and the worst part is, i cant take it off!

other than that, life’s going fine, i am preparing myself for the harsh winter ahead, i hope its not a black christmas this year, i want some snow at the least =)

lazy ass canadian douchefucks

once again, this blog has been dead for a while now, and its all due to my laziness to update it

today was a real piss off, due to the slack services of my school. stupid people. since i joined school in grade 11, i dont have the subject credits for the grade 9 and grade 10 years ( i need 18 credits  to graduate with a high school diploma, and i need that diploma for Uni applications, and right now i have 4 credits now) , and i showed them my O lvl result slip and they were like, yeah yeah we’ll give it to you dont worry, and when i went to student services today, i found out they still didnt give me the credits yet!!!! and they had the audacity to say “ur a grade 12 student, we have to do it now, okay, we’ll do it now” …that means if i hadnt gone to clarify about my credits, i dont think they would have given it to me, what a bunch of lazy ass douchebags, I MISS THE EFFICIENCY OF SINGAPORE. I REALLY MISS IT

they better gimme those credits, otherwise how the hell am i gonna graduate? stupid lazy ass bummers, i feel like giving them a reality check

on the more positive note, studies are going well, am havin a good time in school….made many new friends =)))

anyways, i think i better get back to my Chem Equilibria tutorial, hmmm well it bores me but i gotta do it nonetheless.

University Fair! / Homework Attack!

What a weekend it has been. Saturday went for the Ontario Universities fair! all the universities from ontario had set up booths there and it was a good chance to find out what courses these universities had to offer. many universities attended, some of which i didnt hear of O_O

I have narrowed down my choices to University of Waterloo and University of Toronto (in case ur wondering, Waterloo is a small city just west of Toronto and University of Waterloo is famous for its engineering and Co-op programme)

So yeah, had good detailed conversations with some of the professors who had come to the fair. I chose waterloo because of its Co-op programme. How it works: A student will have a 5 year undergraduate course, in which he will work a total of 2 years. In one semester, students work 4 months and study 4 months, the university helps to find a job of your interest and liking and u get to immediately apply what you learn in the lecture halls to the real environment. Also, you get paid when you work! so, its like having a extra bonus!

University of toronto also has a co-op programme but it only takes place after 3rd year and u get one year of work experience. I am stuck between which of these three engineering major to choose. Its either Mechantronics Engineering , Management Engineering, or Electrical and Computer Engineering. Luckily, there`s still time to think abt it. =D

Upon reaching home (after coming back from the fair)..i had a ton of business homework to complete, so i started at about 7pm and ended at abt midnight…i was soo tired, i slept immediately after that

Sunday i woke up late =D had a chemistry assignment to finish. it took me the whole afternoon to finish it..and now here i am free..as a bird, blogging

all else is fine..autumn season is approaching and i cant wait for the orange maple leaves to fall from the trees =D
